INWIC was proud to participate in the prestigious 22nd European Conference organized by Centro Studi Galileo, which took place in 13 and 14 June 2025 in Milan, Italy. This internationally recognized event brought together leading experts, researchers, and industry professionals to explore the latest advancements in refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump (RACHP) technologies, with a strong focus on sustainability and innovation.

Chaired by former INWIC President Colleen Keyworth, INWIC was especially proud to host and participate in the Special Session on Women in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, which took place on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

At this special session, Ina Colombo (current INWIC President and Secretary of the IIR CaRe Working Group) presented the key findings of the paper “Women in the Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, and Heat Pump (RACHP) Industry in the European Region.” This paper draws on data from a 2022 global survey on Women in the Cooling, with a particular focus on the 302 responses from Europe. Conducted by the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) and UNEP OzonAction, the study explores the challenges and opportunities faced by women in this traditionally male-dominated field. Key insights include:

  • Demographics: 58% of respondents were over 40 years old; 57% held postgraduate degrees.
  • Work sectors: Women were employed across a wide range of RACHP areas.
  • Challenges: The main difficulty cited was maintaining a work-life balance (47%).
  • Career development: While promotion opportunities were limited, many women reported that earning the respect and confidence of their colleagues was a major achievement.
  • Pay: 58% felt fairly compensated for their duties, but only 44% believed they were paid equally to men.
  • Role models: Half of the respondents lacked a role model; however, among those who had one, one-third said it had influenced their career choice.

The paper underscores the urgent need for greater support, visibility, and retention of women in the sector and introduces initiatives such as the IIR Women in Cooling Database and INWIC Mentorship Programme.
