SUMMARY:2024 Indoor Air Quality Conference
DESCRIPTION:Good quality indoor air is critical for good health. Australians spend 90 per cent of their time indoors – in the home\, office\, or other types of buildings – where airborne particles\, gases\, chemicals\, mould\, and other pollutants can cause headaches\, eye irritation\, allergies\, and fatigue. Serious pollutants can cause certain types of cancers and other long-term health complications. \nSupplying clean air through a building’s heating\, ventilation\, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems can prevent many environmental health hazards such as asthma. According to Asthma Australia\, asthma affects one in nine Australians (around 2.7 million people). \nThe Indoor Air Quality Conference 2024 will be held in Melbourne from July 15–16. \nThe purpose of this conference is to provide AIRAH members and the broader industry with a platform for discussing issues related to indoor air quality (IAQ). The major theme of the conference is exploring new and emerging technologies to better understand the science of indoor air quality (IAQ). \nINWIC will take part in this event and promote its activities by distributing flyers and brochures on its stand.

SUMMARY:ASHRAE/AIA/APPA/BOMA/IFMA Decarbonization Conference for the Built Environment
DESCRIPTION:The Decarbonization Conference for the Built Environment will be an information and idea exchange\, between stakeholders in the built environment industry\, concerning the timely and important topic of reducing carbon emissions from buildings. The goal is to discuss the design\, construction\, ownership\, and operation of facilities targeted for reduced or neutral impact on the environment with respect to carbon footprint. A primary objective of the conference is to enhance the knowledge base in North America on decarbonization efforts. \nThe conference is organized by ASHRAE\, AIA\, APPA\, BOMA\, and IFMA. \nThe conference will focus on educating attendees on methods to decrease carbon emissions\, both embodied and operational\, in order to reduce the impact of buildings on the climate crises. The conference program will address current and future governmental policies and regulations for which engineers\, architects\, owners and operators need to be aware of to address environmentally-responsible building requirements. \n“The goal of this conference is to bring persons who work in all aspects of building design\, construction\, operation\, ownership and management into the same room to address how the building industry as a whole can improve the impact buildings have on the global climate crises\,” said ASHRAE President-Elect Ginger Scoggins. “Since building design\, construction and operation contribute close to 40% of total global emissions of carbon\, it is imperative that we all work together to develop a path forward to address our impact”. \n“The built environment generates nearly 40 percent of CO2 emissions annually with approximately 27 percent attributed to building operations\, placing significant responsibility for reducing operational and embodied carbon emissions on the built environment industry. We must take the lead in ensuring that what we design\, construct\, operate and manage is achieved thoughtfully\, strategically\, collaboratively. Working together to reduce or reverse the harmful impacts of our buildings is empowering\, but we need direction on how to go about it. ASHRAE’s Decarbonization Conference will help us integrate our perspectives to help our industry take meaningful action.” – Laurie A. Gilmer\, P.E.\, CFM\, FMP\, SFP\, LEED AP\, Chair\, IFMA’s Global Board of Directors

SUMMARY:10th IIR Conference on Ammonia and CO2 Refrigeration Technologies
DESCRIPTION:The climate change is a global issue with catastrophic consequences which remind us almost every day. There are alarming projections of GHG emissions including HFCs. In Europe the Regulation No 517/2014 on F-gases has been introduced with many restrictions and gradually phase-down. A new revision is underway in 2023. The 28 Meeting of the Parties (in 2016) adopted an amendment to the Montreal Protocol for gradually phase-down of HFCs (from 2019 to 2047) to achieve 85% reduction. Recently\, new HFC refrigerants (named HFOs) with low GWPs are appeared on the market. However\, in July 2021\, five European member states published their intention to submit a joint proposal for restriction of PFAS\, including HFC and HFO refrigerants. \nThe choice of refrigerant (and technology) has become a very complicated issue. In the RAC industry\, confusion and uncertainties related to working fluids in many applications are continuing. In addition\, there are many groups with diverging interests: chemical companies\, manufacturers of equipment\, distributors\, users\, environmental organizations\, politicians and the public. \nAfter several conversions CFCs -> HCFCs -> HFCs -> HFOs(?)\, the global trend towards using natural refrigerants is intensifying. There are very positive signals in Europe and some parts in the world where expanding use of ammonia\, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons in various applications is occurring. We will eliminate all uncertainties in the future regarding both Protocols and environmental regulations applying to natural refrigerants. \nOf all refrigerants applied today\, ammonia and CO2 are the oldest that have been used since the 19th century. The topics of the conference are: design of modern ammonia and new CO2 systems and technological innovations\, improving energy efficiency\, various applications\, technical guidelines and safety regulations. It is very clear: by using more ammonia and CO2 refrigerants\, we are employing environmentally friendly technologies.
